If my dog causes damage, does the civil liability insurance cover it?

Yes, the dog's civil liability insurance covers any damage that the animal may cause to third-party property.

Is it mandatory to take out civil liability insurance for dogs even if they are not dangerous?

Effective 29 September 2023, the law safeguarding animal rights and welfare was enacted, mandating that all dog owners, irrespective of breed or size, must acquire civil liability insurance. While civil liability insurance is not yet mandatory for dog owners, it will be required once the regulatory development of Law 7/2023 is finalised. However, local regulations or specific dog activities may impose stricter requirements.

How do I know if my dog is considered potentially dangerous?

According to the law (article 2.2 of Law 50/1999), the breeds considered by definition as potentially dangerous are: Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu, Akita Inu.
